This article delves into Thailand’s growing role as a manufacturing hub for pharmaceutical products, including steroids, that are exported across the globe and often end up in the hands of bodybuilders and other fitness enthusiasts.

The easy availability of performance-enhancing drugs and their low price in Thailand lures thousands of bodybuilders each year to the country’s beach resorts, particularly Pattaya. During a two-week investigation, this reporter found pharmacies in both Bangkok and Pattaya that sell some steroid brands for 10 times less than their Australian black market price.

At Tops Pharmacy on South Pattaya’s 2nd Road, customers were offered a visual catalogue of the various types of steroids and told by pharmacists what they should take to bulk up or cut. The pharmacists also talked the customers through the process of stacking – taking more than one form of drug at a time to maximise effectiveness and minimise side effects.

Steroids can cause a variety of adverse health effects, such as hair growth (for men), infertility and a decrease in sperm count. They can also have a negative impact on mental health, such as depression and anxiety.

In Australia, the use of illegal substances like steroids is a criminal offence. Nevertheless, the Brisbane-based amateur bodybuilder Jarrad Fisher said that he and his friends were regular visitors to Thailand to stockpile supplements that are illegal to import into Australia and then post them home.
