What is Tazarotene Cream?

A tazarotene cream is a topical retinoid used to treat the signs and symptoms of overexposure to sunlight (photodamage). It also helps improve the appearance of certain skin conditions such as acne and plaque psoriasis. It belongs to a class of medications called tretinoins and works partly by changing the way your skin cells grow. Tazarotene is available as a cream, gel, and foam to apply to the skin. It is usually applied once a day in the evening, and the exact frequency of use depends on the condition for which it is prescribed.

Tazarotene has been shown to improve the appearance of photodamage, and it is effective in improving the skin texture of facial areas that have moderate or severe sun damage. In a 24-week double blinded investigator masked comparison, 0.1% tazarotene produced significantly greater improvements in mottled hyperpigmentation and fine wrinkling than did the vehicle cream.

This medication should not be used by women who are pregnant or who might become pregnant. It is known to be excreted into rodent milk, and it should be avoided during breastfeeding until more information about its safety is available. This medication is also not recommended for children under 12 years of age, as it has not been studied in this age group.

Tazarotene is a topical retinoid and is generally well tolerated, but it may cause side effects such as dryness and irritation. These side effects usually develop slowly and fade with regular use, as the effects of the medication wear off. Before applying this medicine, clean the affected area and then gently dry it. Apply a thin layer of the cream, gel, or foam to the skin once a day in the evening. Avoid the eyes, lips, and mucous membranes. You should wash your hands afterward unless you are treating psoriasis on the hands.

This medication is sometimes dispensed in conjunction with other topical treatments such as azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic acid, isotretinoin, or salicylic acid. Your doctor will advise you about combining products and the best order to apply them. It is advisable to use sunscreens with a high SPF and protective clothing whenever you are outdoors while you are using this medication.

This medication should not be used with any other skin products that are known to have a strong drying effect, including certain soaps and shampoos, permanent wave solutions, hair dyes, and moisturizers.
